Parklands People: Fiona Stoddart

“If I can bring a little bit of joy to someone’s day, then I’ve done my job”

Fiona Stoddart had never worked in care when she took a chance on a part-time wellbeing role at Eilean Dubh. Today, she is one of three wellbeing coordinators behind the activities, outings and events that have become a big part of life at the award-winning Fortrose care home.

After lockdown, Fiona started working for herself as a florist. She loved the work but found working alone could be lonely.

“I’m very much a people person, and I knew I wanted to do something where I could bring a little joy and happiness to others,” she says.

“When I saw the wellbeing role advertised at Eilean Dubh, I thought, ‘Why not give it a try and see how I get on?’ I honestly never imagined just how much I would love it. It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

Fiona joined Eilean Dubh in May 2021, just weeks after the home opened, and has been part of the team ever since.

“My week is all about creating moments of happiness, purpose and connection for our residents,” she says. “For me, it’s simple. If I can bring a little bit of joy to someone’s day, then I’ve done my job. My biggest reward is seeing the happiness on our residents’ faces.”

Over the past five years, Fiona and fellow wellbeing coordinators Claire Goodwin and Carrie Mudge have organised everything from an arts club and award-winning horticultural club to Pride celebrations, fashion shows and talent shows.

But Fiona says the ideas begin with the residents themselves.

“Our ideas come from getting to know our residents, their lives, their stories, their interests and the things they’ve loved doing.

“Just because someone moves into a care home doesn’t mean the fun stops. In our eyes, the fun has only just begun!

“Some residents think they’ll never get to do certain things again, but that gives us even more drive to make it happen. Being in your 80s or 90s doesn’t mean you stop living, laughing and making memories. We want to help make those moments happen.”

One moment in particular has stayed with Fiona.

Billy Mackintosh had performed for many years with the Billy Mackintosh Ceilidh Dance Band, but had always said his days of taking to the stage were behind him.

So when Eilean Dubh held its talent show, Fiona was delighted when Billy decided to perform Hole in My Bucket on stage with her.

“Billy always said he would never perform again, so seeing him take to the stage and sing was such a special moment. It reminded me that, with a little encouragement and belief, we can help create moments that residents and their families will treasure forever.”

Families are an important part of life at Eilean Dubh too.

“We want families to feel welcome, involved and reassured that their loved ones are happy, stimulated and enjoying life. When residents, families and staff all feel connected, that’s when you really create a special home,” says Fiona.

In 2025, Eilean Dubh was named Regional Care Home of the Year for Scotland at the Caring UK Awards.

“We were absolutely overwhelmed and incredibly proud,” Fiona says.

“It’s a reflection of what can be achieved when you have a team who genuinely care. Every member of our team plays their part, and together we make the magic happen. I couldn’t be prouder to be part of such a special team and such a wonderful home.”

For Fiona, though, making a difference doesn’t always mean putting on a big event.

“It can be something as simple as seeing a resident sing along to their favourite song and watching their face light up.

“What motivates me most is simply creating joy. Every day I go into Eilean Dubh, I want to bring a smile to our residents’ faces and give them new experiences and memories to enjoy.

“Knowing that we can make a difference, however big or small, is what keeps us motivated to keep coming up with new ideas and making things happen.”
