A Buckie care home has received the highest possible rating from the industry regulator for the way it supports residents to get the most out of life.
Parklands and Burnbank, part of the Parklands Care Homes group, was assessed during an unannounced visit by the Care Inspectorate in December, during which inspectors spoke to residents, their relatives and staff.
Inspectors assessed the home against seven criteria. The home achieved the highest possible score – 6 (excellent) – for the way it enabled residents to get the most out of life, making it the top scoring home in the Parklands group. In every other category, including support for wellbeing and leadership, the inspectors awarded Parklands and Burnbank a 5 star (very good) rating.
Staff were praised by residents and relatives for their kindness and consistent standards of care and support. “This contributed to the high satisfaction they had with the care provision,” the report noted.
The report found that residents “appeared very happy and well cared for” and that residents were supported to lead active and interesting lives. “The service had recognised that helping people to remain active and to lead meaningful lives had a positive impact on their health and wellbeing.” New friendships had formed in the home and residents were once again enjoying trips out into the community, as well as events within the home.
A number of relatives told inspectors that their loved ones now led richer and fuller lives since moving into the home. Others had said that the health of their loved ones had improved.
Inspectors found there was good evidence of effective communication. “People knew what was planned for the day and were kept up-to-date with any changes. This helped people feel valued. Relatives said that they were updated and informed of any changes.”
The report also said that residents and relatives were encouraged to have their say on the running of the home through regular meetings and were supported to participate and contribute to individual care reviews.
Staff were valued and supported to develop their professional skills and knowledge and to take on extended roles, the report said. “There was an improvement focused culture in the service, and a determination to enhancing people’s experiences and quality of life,” it added.
All five of Parklands’ Moray care homes are now rated 5 star for the quality of their leadership and the way care teams support residents’ well-being.
Denise Risk, manager of Parklands and Burnbank care home said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have received such a glowing report from the Care Inspectorate. I think it speaks volumes for the amazing team I have here at Parklands and Burnbank. Every member of the team plays an important role in ensuring our residents enjoy life to the full.”
Ron Taylor, managing director of Parklands group said: “I’m immensely proud of all our care teams but the team at Parklands and Burnbank have truly excelled. They are a credit to the Parklands group and to Buckie. Denise and her team have delivered consistently high levels of care and support for our residents and they deserve this accolade.”
