"Ray of sunshine" Hilda celebrates 100th birthday

9 April 2020

A Buckie care home resident - described as a "ray of sunshine" - has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Hilda Thomson, a resident at Netherha Care Home, marked the milestone birthday with tea and cake with other residents and care staff.

The COVID-19 lockdown meant she wasn’t able to celebrate in person with family and friends, but that didn’t dampen her spirits as her son John wished her happy birthday through the care home window.

Hilda is originally from Clochan and worked as a home economics teacher at Buckie Community High School.

Over 100 relatives, friends and former students took to Facebook to wish her well. Hilda also received a congratulatory message from Her Majesty The Queen.

Ruth Smith, manager at Netherha Care Home, said: “Hilda is a ray of sunshine in these difficult times and she is very much loved by the residents and staff. Although she wasn’t able to gather with family and friends, she was overjoyed to see her son. It was a very happy occasion and she was really touched by the outpouring of love and support from her friends in the community.”
