Parklands People: Alexis Le Neven

From France to the Black Isle: Alexis’ journey through care

Alexis Le Neven’s path to becoming manager of Eilean Dubh Care Home has taken him across continents, hospital wards and care settings, with the father of two ultimately settling in the Black Isle.

Originally from France, Alexis trained as a nurse and gained experience across hospital departments, including intensive care, cardiology, and the operating theatre. His passion for new experiences took him to New Zealand, where he spent over a year traveling, working, and meeting his partner, before settling in Scotland, where he has built a successful career in social care.

Eilean Dubh opened in 2021. The opportunity to be part of a new project was a major factor in Alexis’s decision to join Parklands Care Homes. Living on the Black Isle, the location was ideal, and the company’s values aligned with his own.

“I wanted to be part of a home that was building something special, where I could make a real impact,” he says. “Parklands’ focus on high-quality care and strong community ties really appealed to me.”

Adjusting to a new country and working environment had its challenges, from learning different procedures to understanding new regulations. But Alexis thrives on challenges.

“My experience traveling and working in different countries taught me how to adapt quickly,” he says. “It gave me the confidence to embrace change and find solutions, no matter what the obstacle.”

As manager of Eilean Dubh, Alexis is committed to delivering high-quality, person-centred care. He also oversees recruitment, training, and team development, ensuring a positive and effective working environment.

Alexis also enjoys being hands-on, working alongside his team to care for residents.“I believe in leading by example,” he says. “It’s important for me to be hands-on, to work alongside my team, and to support them however I can.”

He also emphasises the importance of open communication. “Listening to residents, families, and staff is key to making sure we provide the best possible care.”

One of the biggest highlights of the year was achieving a Grade 5 (very good) rating from the Care Inspectorate last year, an outstanding result and a first for Eilean Dubh. Alexis credits this success to the dedication of his team.

“Having an exceptional team truly makes a difference. Everyone is committed to working together to ensure the best care for our residents,” he says. “The home offers a pleasant work environment with a positive atmosphere, which also plays a key role in our success. When our staff are happy, our residents receive excellent care and are happy, which in turn makes their families happy.

Eilean Dubh is known for its lively, welcoming spirit, and Alexis is dedicated to keeping that strong community connection alive. Many residents have deep roots in the Black Isle, and the care home helps them continue the activities they’ve always loved while introducing them to new experiences.

A great example is gardening enthusiast Billy Mackintosh. Previously a regular competitor at the Black Isle Show, Billy never imagined he’d take part again—until he joined an Eilean Dubh team that went on to win two top prizes. It was a moment of great pride and joy for Billy and his family. Regular events involving the local community have also been a great success, including a fundraising fashion show in support of Highland Hospice, the home’s charity partner.

Alexis is a strong advocate for careers in care, believing it’s one of the most fulfilling professions. “You have the opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life, not just for the person you care for, but also for their families and loved ones,” he says. “It’s a job that brings great rewards and offers countless career opportunities. No two days are the same, so you’ll never be stuck in a routine.”

For Alexis, Eilean Dubh is more than just a workplace—it’s a community. The sense of belonging, the relationships built with residents and their families, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact each day are what drive him.

Centuries ago, Scotland and France were bound by the Auld Alliance, a historic friendship built on mutual support and shared values. Today, Alexis feels a similar connection. “There’s a warmth and community spirit here that reminds me of home,” he says. He has no regrets about moving to Scotland. “It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life,” he says. “I miss France at times, but honestly—I love this country.”
