Sophie Legge’s journey at Burnbank Care Home in Buckie is a story of growth, determination, and compassion. A decade ago, Sophie began her career at Burnbank, working every second weekend as a cleaner while still in school. Little did she know, those first shifts would be the start of a fulfilling career dedicated to caring for others.
“When I left school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my career,” Sophie admits. She took on extra hours working in the pantry as a relief staff member. “I enjoyed working over the summer cleaning and working in the pantry, but as summer ended, I thought I needed something a bit more steady.”
Encouraged by her manager, she decided to try her hand at caring—an unexpected but life-changing decision.“To be completely honest, this is something I never saw myself doing, but it was the best decision I ever made,” she reflects. “I immediately found the place where I felt I was meant to be.”
Sophie’s natural empathy and dedication were evident from the start, earning her a permanent role. Over the years, she gained experience across every Parklands care home, developing a deep appreciation for the “one big family” ethos that connects the homes.
Determined to grow in her career, Sophie completed her SVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications while continuing her work. “The courses gave me a better understanding and confidence in my ability to do my job,” Sophie explains. “I’m so glad I pushed myself through this, as I knew deep down I was capable—it was just having the confidence within myself to go ahead and do it.”
Sophie credits the support she received from her colleagues as key to her success. “The support I had from my manager, shift leader, and nurses was second to none. Everyone was willing to help if I struggled with anything.”
One of the things Sophie values most about her work is the camaraderie among staff and the chance to build meaningful relationships. “Working in a care home means you’ll have the chance to engage with new people and build positive relationships. There’s also plenty of opportunity for career progression within the homes.”
Armed with her new qualifications, Sophie stepped into the role of Shift Leader—a position she approaches with pride and enthusiasm.
As a Shift Leader, Sophie ensures every shift runs smoothly, supports her team, and liaises with families, nurses, GPs and other health professionals to provide the best care for residents. She also plays a key role in care planning and works closely with families to ensure residents' needs and wishes are met safely. “The thing I love most about my job is being able to go in there and make a difference. I have a great relationship with the residents, and I help them have the best quality of life possible,” she says.
A defining moment in Sophie’s career came during the COVID-19 pandemic. “When the whole world was in lockdown, we were out working and continuing with our jobs,” she recalls. “It was a difficult time, and none of us could see our families, but we had our Parklands family.”
Sophie and her colleagues became a lifeline for their residents. Together, they brought positivity and comfort, ensuring that even in dark times, Burnbank felt like a safe and loving home. “We turned every negative into a positive and tried to make the world a less scary place for the residents we care for,” she recalls.
Looking back on her career, Sophie reflects, “I’m so glad I did this. It has given me a lot more confidence within myself.” From her first days as a weekend cleaner to her current role as Shift Leader, Sophie’s journey highlights the importance of self-belief and perseverance. After a decade of dedication, she’s ready to embrace whatever challenges and opportunities lie ahead.
