Young carer honoured with Saltire Award for volunteering

A young carer has been recognised for her contribution as a volunteer at a Buckie care home.

Abby Phimister from Buckie has received The Ascent Saltire Award after completing 100 hours of volunteering at Netherha Care Home. The Saltire Awards, supported by the Scottish government, recognise and reward the commitment of young volunteers.

Abby began volunteering at Netherha care home, assisting with activities and providing friendship and support for residents. Her passion for care soon led her to take on the role of a relief carer, working alongside her mum Lynsey Watt, a nurse at Netherha.

Inspired by her experience, Abby now plans to study Medicine at university while continuing to work at Netherha during holidays.

Emily Johnston, manager of Netherha Care Home, said: “As a volunteer Abby built up really positive relationships with the residents which made the transition into the caring role easy. She has turned out to be an outstanding carer. She is kind and compassionate towards the residents and very hands on. Abby will be a great miss when she leaves for university.”
