Lynemore care duo hailed for “exceptional” student support

4 September 2023

Two senior Grantown care workers have been recognised for their “exceptional support in clinical practice.”
Shift leader Michelle Anderson and nurse Shiona Martin, who both work at Lynemore care home in the town, received the recognition following a nomination by Ashleigh Wilson, a nursing student from UHI’s Department of Nursing and Midwifery.
Ashleigh, a second year student, spent five weeks at Lynemore over the summer and worked closely with the pair. The two were “shocked and surprised” to receive a Certificate of Nomination from the Head of the Department, Dr Nicola Carey, thanking them for their support and encouragement.
Ashleigh said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at Lynemore and it was great to have experience working in a nursing home. All the staff made me feel so welcome from day one and my time there flew by. I learnt so much, especially thanks to Shiona, who has such a vast array of knowledge. My time at Lynemore has shown me how rewarding it is to work in a nursing home by providing care and support to the residents, and I would love to start my nursing career in a home like Lynemore.”
Michelle said: “Having our very first student nurse was daunting. As a shift leader I was surprised to be nominated as I’m not a nurse and was unsure what Ashleigh would learn from me, but she was engaged and enthusiastic about being in a care home during her placement. I enjoyed sharing my role and how I support the Nursing team to ensure the best outcomes for our residents. I can’t wait to welcome our next student.”
Shiona added: “I was shocked and surprised to receive this nomination. As a nurse I am passionate about showing how diverse and rewarding working in social care can be. Students bring enthusiasm and up to date knowledge, from which we can all learn. This nomination is not just for me but the whole team who supported Ashleigh over her five week placement with us. Roll on our next student!”
Lynemore has also hosted paramedic students from Robert Gordon University this summer.
