Margaret rises to the occasion in charity fundraising challenge

9 June 2026

A 90-year-old resident at Wakefield House Care Home in Cullen has raised more than £1,000 for a local mental health charity.

Margaret Douglas took on the challenge of climbing Castle Hill in Cullen, alongside home manager Jamie Grassick to raise money for Feeling Blue, a charity close to the heart of many staff and residents.

The sponsored walk covered around half a mile from the care home to the summit, with a steady uphill climb along the way.

Despite wet and windy conditions, Margaret completed her sponsored climb, raising £1,060 – more than double the original target.

The challenge was inspired by a fundraising meeting at the home earlier this year, when residents and colleagues discussed ways to support Parklands' charity partners.

Wakefield House manager Jamie said: “Margaret was amazing. She was determined to reach the top and never once doubted she could do it. I admire her so much. To raise more than £1,000 for such an important cause is a tremendous achievement.”

Margaret said: “It was a challenge, especially with the weather, but it was all worthwhile for such a good cause. I'd like to thank everyone who supported me and made a donation.”

Feeling Blue, based in Buckie, provides support to people experiencing loneliness, isolation and mental health difficulties. It was founded in 2024 by Pauline Thain. She said: “Feeling Blue are so grateful to Margaret for this fantastic challenge. She is an absolute inspiration to us all. The money she has raised will help so many people.”
