Care worker goes the extra mile for residents

7 May 2026

An Easter Ross care home worker has completed the West Highland Way, raising £600 to support residents.

Nicky Shearer, from Innis Mhor care home in Tain, took on the 96-mile route from Milngavie to Fort William, finishing a day ahead of schedule after six days of walking. Along the way, she tackled around 14,000ft of ascent and clocked up more than 238,000 steps.

The funds raised will go towards the residents’ comfort fund at the Tain care home, helping to support activities, outings and entertainment for residents.

Nicky said: “I had arrived at the end of my West Highland Way hike a day earlier than planned. It was my first long-distance walk and a real challenge, but I’m so grateful for all the support I have received.”

Colleague Antonia Shearer recently completed a fundraising trek across the Great Wall of China in support of Highland Hospice, personally raising over £2,800 for the charity.

Innis Mhor Manager Kate Walker said: “We’re incredibly proud of Nicky and Antonia for what they’ve achieved. Both challenges took real commitment and determination, and all in support of others. It says a lot about the kind of people they are and the values they bring to the team.”

Nicky was joined on the journey by friend Mark Norman (pictured).
