Deveron Way rolls out red carpet for big screen debut

9 October 2026

Residents at Deveron Way Care Home in Huntly have been enjoying a little movie magic following the opening of their very own picture house.

Dubbed the ‘Deveron Way Drive-In’, the new cinema experience made its debut with a screening of the Disney classic Mary Poppins, complete with popcorn, snacks and specially made cinema tickets – ensuring the experience was practically perfect in every way.

The home's upstairs activities room was transformed for the occasion, with a large screen bringing a touch of Hollywood to Huntly.

Wellbeing Coordinator James Hayes played the part of cinema usher, checking tickets as residents arrived for the screening.

James said: “We had the projector and screen already, so I thought, why not turn the activities room into our own little cinema?

“The residents absolutely loved it. It was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves and getting into the spirit of the occasion.”

Plans are already under way to make the Drive-In a regular monthly event, with residents invited to recommend films and vote for what they'd like to watch next. The musical South Pacific is already being lined up for a future screening.

The team is also exploring how the space could be used more widely, including film screenings with local schools and nurseries, family cinema afternoons and other community activities.

James added: “We're hoping to develop it into a dedicated cinema room in time, and we'd love to get local schools, nurseries and families involved. There's so much potential to use the space to bring people together.”
