Emotional return to ballroom rekindles treasured memories

A care home resident has returned to the Aberdeen ballroom where she first met her husband more than 75 years ago.

Jane McDonald, a resident at Weston View in Keith, revisited the city's famous Beach Ballroom after telling wellbeing coordinator Gill Ingram it held special memories of her late husband, Bill. Gill then contacted the team at the iconic venue, who were delighted to arrange a special visit.

Jane met Bill, who was originally from Nairn but working in Aberdeen at the time, at the city's famous Beach Ballroom in the late 1940s. The couple fell in love through their shared passion for dancing and married in March 1952.

During her visit, Jane enjoyed looking through historic photographs of the ballroom and reminiscing about the many happy times she and Bill enjoyed there.

Jane said: “I was thrilled to visit the Ballroom and it brought back precious memories of my time dancing with Bill. I only wish I could dance like that these days.”

Gill added: "Jane told me how much the Beach Ballroom meant to her and how she would love to see it again. It was wonderful to be able to make that happen. I'd like to thank the wonderful team at the Beach Ballroom for giving Jane such a warm welcome and helping create such a memorable day. Seeing her relive those memories and talk about meeting Bill was incredibly special."

Jane's visit is one of a number of personal wishes being fulfilled by the home's wellbeing team, giving residents the chance to revisit places that have played an important part in their lives.
